Castiel hears him before he sees him. 

Well, technically, he hears the low grumble of his car engine and how its tires scrape against the rocky ground of the school parking lot. He turns around, takes one look at the guy stepping out of a slick, black car and throwing a backpack over his shoulder, and doesn’t recognize him. 

He’d know if there was a guy like this anywhere in a ten mile radius. Tall, dark and handsome, a bow-legged, spiky-haired guy with a ridiculously large leather jacket that seems to fit him nicely nonetheless. He can’t help but stare as the guy in question closes the car door and starts walking up the steps, looking at the ground like it’s personally offended him. Nor can he look away when the guy’s eyes flick up at him, meet his own, and keep contact as he reaches the top of the steps, in touching distance now. 

“Hey.”, he says, and Castiel all but swoons at how smooth his voice is. And his eyes are a really nice shade of green- and with the Sun shining in the guys face, they’re very bright, which makes them very hard to look away from.

“Hi.”, he manages, rubbing the back of his neck and looking at his feet awkwardly. “You’re new.”, it’s more of a statement than a question, to which the guy chuckles. 

“Yep, moved here last week.”, there’s a smile playing on his face. Then, he adds, “I’m Dean.”.

“Castiel.”, they shake hands, lingering there a bit too long, not that either of them says anything about it. “You need help getting to class?”, Castiel surprises himself with his boldness, but Dean smiles and nods.

“Yeah, thanks.”, he says, and they walk into the school.

He flings an arm around Castiel’s shoulders casually, but he doesn’t notice how Castiel leans into it a bit, but even if he did, he knows he wouldn’t mind for some reason he has yet to figure out.
